OntarioOntario and the North ShoreOur adventures in Ontario started with a wonderful visit with our friends Andy and Kim on the Bruce Peninsula. We visited lots of beautiful shorelines along the Bruce, swam in crystal clear water, basked on warm rocks and had fabulous fish tacos in Tobermory. From the Bruce we sailed on the Chichemaun to Manitoulin Island for a five day cycling trek across the island. Kagawong and the chocolate factory there were a true highlight, as was the art gallery in Perivale and the beaches along the south shore. From Manitoulin we headed south to Toronto for Miriam and Geoff’s beautiful wedding, and then to the cottage to outfit the car for its long voyage west. At the end of our first driving day, Thursday, August 26th, we stopped in Sault Ste. Marie for some rest and gourmet meals at Uncle John's, where we had the best chicken and ice cream all summer. We spent the next day visiting Grandad, strolling through his orchard and enjoying a great meal at the Avery camp with Aunt Marion, Jennifer, Grandad and Marge. We spent a lovely night out at Haviland Bay listening to the waves before pushing on to do a backpacking trip on the Voyageur Trail between Terrace Bay and Schreiber. Three days later, dirty and tired, we pulled in to Julie and Will’s place in Thunder Bay for a great meal. Julie and Will have a habit of preparing amazing curry dishes, and as world travelers, they've picked up a few, fine flavours for Asian cuisine. That night, they decided to share those tastes with us, and prepared a fantastic meal with lots of turmeric in it...which they advised we eat in our camping clothes to prevent yellow stains on our 'good' clothes! How often do you dress down for dinner?! We emerged from the meal unscathed, and went on to enjoy pancakes at the Hoito and have an intriguing tea party the next afternoon with Julie’s new Chinese teas, picked up on her most recent travels. After a quick visit to the Surprise Lake cottage and a sauna evening complete with guitar jam session and Julie’s apple pie, we drove into the sunset.
