ManitobaWinnipeg Chez Aunt Mary's...The drive from Thunder Bay to Winnipeg was, as usual, uneventful. We did explore Egli’s sheep farm, however, and just for old time’s sake, we had giant milkshakes in Vermillion Bay, near my former job site at Blue Lake Provincial Park. The long weekend in Winnipeg was relaxing, energizing and fun. Aunt Mary was a fabulous host and under her guidance we navigated the sights and bike routes of the city. We rode down to ‘The Forks’ past Grant’s Old Mill, through City Park and the sculpture gardens, and along the Assiniboine River, passing the parliament buildings and Louis Riel memorial en route. The Forks were bustling because of the holiday, and we enjoyed a Fort Gary beer while we people-watched before heading home. Mary took us to the local farmer’s market, stocked with organic goods, tasty treats and interesting locals. Another stop in our day of errands was Mary’s local coffee roaster, where we sampled and selected some tasty java – which we are still enjoying now! Oh, and we got to tour the Winnipeg edition of Mountain Equipment Coop, which I guess is a ‘sight’ if you’re into the outdoors and gear <grin>. We also had the chance to see my Grandpa's new digs! We toured his building, overlooking the Sturgeon River, and enjoyed a great cup 'o tea and cookies along with a great evening visit. All in all it was a great long weekend, which became even longer when a storm rolled in on our departure day, enticing us to stay for another night!
